History of the Society

The South African Genetics Society was founded on 27 March 1956 in Pretoria, with Dr JDJ Hofmeyr as first president.  The initial memberships fees of R0,50 per year were increased to R2,00 per year in 1964.  The Society organised the First Congress of the SAGS in 1958, and there after evey four years.  From 1968 onwards a six monthly newsletter was also published and distributed to all members.  All archival material is currently housed at the Dept of Genetics, University of Pretoria.  All available photographs of previous Congresses can be viewed under "Meetings".   Should you require access to any of the archival material, or have addditional material that would like to make available for the archives, please contact the SAGS secretary at info@sagene.co.za.
