SAGS 2008
The 20th Congress of the SAGS was held in Pretoria, with as theme "The Next Century of Genetics". This meeting was of special significance, as it coincided with the centenary celebrations of the University of Pretoria. The opening address on "Genetics in the next 100 years" was delivered by Prof Sydney Brenner, Nobel Laureate in 2002. Other invited plenary speakers included Prof Rob Martienssen (Cold Spring Harbor, USA), Dr Sergei Kosakovsky-Pond (University of California San Diego, USA), Prof Rebecca Doerge (Purdue University, USA), Dr Matias Kirst (University of Florida, USA) and Dr Andrzej Kilian (Diversity Array Technology, Australia). The congress extended over three days, and was followed by two workshops on Phylogenetic testing and Diversity Arrays Technology. The congress was concluded by a Gala Dinner at the Safari Conderence Centre, where science was celebrated in all its diversity.
